Think A Missing Back Tooth Is No Big Deal?

Think A Missing Back Tooth Is No Big Deal?

Most people are embarrassed by having a missing tooth in the front of the mouth. It may not be fair, but a gaping hole would have negative connotations for just about anyone. We can address that issue with a dental implant, at Harris Dental in Phoenix.

But what about a missing molar? Someone who loses a back tooth, it seems, is more likely to leave the gap. “You can’t really see it when I smile, right?” “I have another molar back there, I can chew with that one.” If the tooth had been hurting, sometimes they are so relieved that the pain is gone, they consider an extraction the final answer.

Bone Recession

Since we can’t see the bone that anchors our tooth roots, we may not consider its condition. The health of a jawbone plays an essential role in overall oral health.

When a tooth is extracted, the bone at the extraction site begins to shrink and recede. A dental implant prevents that: it replaces the tooth root and maintains the health of the bone.

A dental implant is a titanium post that gets inserted into the jaw. One implant can support an artificial tooth, and several of them can support a dental bridge, or even a full dental arch (denture).

The implant not only supports a replacement tooth and prevents bone recession. It also helps neighboring teeth from shifting and rotating.
