ORAL SEDATION

ORAL SEDATION

Are you experiencing high levels of anxiety when visiting the dentist in Gilbert, AZ? You might be a candidate for Sedation Dentistry at Harris Dental. Our dentists are Certified to administer (oral conscious) sedation, often referred to as “Sleep Dentistry.”

SEDATION DENTISTRY

Advantages of sedation dentistry to patients include:

  • Treatment is completed while you’re in a more relaxed state.
  • You’ll find it easier to sit through longer procedures.
  • Multiple treatments and full mouth restorations can be performed during the same visit.
  • Less discomfort following treatment.

ANTI-ANXIETY PILLS

The most commonly prescribed dental anxiety medications belong to the “benzodiazepine” family. These include drugs like Valium, Halcion, Xanax, or Ativan. They reduce anxiety by binding to and decreasing activity in “fear” receptors in the brain.

Benzodiazepines come in two different types:

  • Sedative-Hypnotics: These medications induce calmness, including drowsiness and even sleep. Physiological sleep occurs during this sleep state, a form of hypnosis.
  • Anti-Anxiety Drugs: These are medications that alleviate anxiety and promote a state of calm and relaxation.

While benzodiazepines function as both sedatives AND anti-anxiety drugs, some target specific areas in the brain related to sleep. Others work more precisely, focusing on fear centers in the brain. Typically, higher doses act as sedatives and induce sleep, while lower doses reduce anxiety without causing sedation.

The benzodiazepines are also depressants of the Central Nervous System (i.e., they can lower blood pressure and respiration). It’s crucial not to mix them with other CNS depressants such as alcohol. Always follow the dosage recommended by your Harris Dental dentist or doctor. Overdosing is possible and could dangerously suppress your breathing, potentially leading to coma or death.

Please note that you shouldn’t travel alone after taking any of these medications. Ensure you have an escort, even if you’re using public transportation or walking! Disorientation is common.

When not to take benzodiazepines:

These drugs can have a negative effect on the liver and the heart. Consult your healthcare provider and/or pharmacist before taking any medication. Be sure to inform your doctor or dentist at Harris Dental if you have any of the following conditions: allergies, narrow-angle glaucoma, pregnancy, severe respiratory disease (COPD), congestive heart failure (CHF), impaired kidney or liver function, depression/bipolar disorder/psychoses, chronic bronchitis, etc. It’s also crucial to let us know if you’re taking other medications due to potential drug interactions.
