INLAYS & ONLAYS

Damaged tooth repair

At Harris Dental in Gilbert, AZ, we often recommend inlays or onlays when more than half of a tooth’s biting surface is damaged. These restorations help preserve the tooth’s natural anatomy.

WHAT ARE DENTAL INLAYS AND ONLAYS?

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations bonded to the damaged area of a tooth. They can be crafted from porcelain, gold, or composite resin. An inlay is similar to a filling but inserted between the cusps.

While gold has traditionally been the material of choice, Dr. Harris and our team at Harris Dental have seen an increasing preference for porcelain. This material offers excellent strength while matching your natural tooth color for a seamless look.

HOW ARE INLAYS AND ONLAYS APPLIED?

At Harris Dental, we complete inlays and onlays over two appointments:

First Appointment:

  • We remove the damaged or decayed area of the tooth (or old filling).
  • The tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay.
  • We take an impression of your tooth to ensure a proper fit and bite.
  • This impression is sent to our trusted lab for fabrication.
  • Dr. Harris applies a temporary sealant to protect your tooth.

Second Appointment:

  • We remove the temporary sealant.
  • Dr. Harris carefully checks the fit of your new inlay or onlay.
  • Once satisfied with the fit, we bond the resin restoration to your tooth.
  • The inlay or onlay is polished for a smooth, comfortable finish.

BENEFITS OF INLAYS AND ONLAYS

At Harris Dental, we appreciate the advantages that inlays and onlays offer:

  • Unlike traditional fillings, which can reduce tooth strength by up to 50%, inlays and onlays can increase tooth strength by up to 75%.
  • These restorations typically last between 10 to 30 years.
  • They’re an excellent alternative to full crowns when significant damage is not extensive enough to require complete coverage.
