Dental Implants: Does Your Age Matter?

Dental Implants: Does Your Age Matter?

Dental implants have rightly been called one of the greatest advances in dentistry: titanium posts that are inserted into the jaw to support one or more artificial teeth. Dental implants are available at Harris Dental in Phoenix.

A common concern for many patients is whether they are too old for a dental implant. We’ll give you the good news in one short word: no! No, age is seldom, if ever, a factor in whether someone is a good candidate for an implant.

The most important consideration is your overall health. Chronic conditions like diabetes or cancer can interfere with the healing process following an implant, so patients with these issues may not be good candidates.

Tobacco use may also rule someone out. Whether it’s smoked or chewed, tobacco can slow the healing process.

Bone Density

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It fuses with the bone, and in addition to supporting a tooth, prevents bone recession. This leads to another factor: a patient has to have enough healthy bone to support it.

Even if you don’t, there are options. Bone grafting is a fairly simple procedure that promotes the growth of new bone.

A final consideration: a patient must  have healthy gum tissue. The best implant candidates should be committed to good dental health, including regular dental visits.

If you’re concerned that you are too old to get a dental implant, rest assured: age is not an issue. At Harris Dental in Phoenix, we can replace teeth with single and multiple dental implants. They are among our restorative dentistry services. Call our office to schedule an appointnent today!
